The Art of Innovation: AP1000® Nuclear Power Plant Safety
Safety is of paramount importance for everything we do at Westinghouse. It’s no surprise, then, that safety was the top priority when designing the AP1000 nuclear plant – the most advanced and safest nuclear plant technology on the market today.
(About the above photo) Work continues on two Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear power plant units at Plant Vogtle in Waynesboro, Georgia. When completed, the two new units will produce electricity that powers 500,000 Georgia homes and businesses with unsurpassed safety and zero carbon emissions.
The AP1000 plant’s innovative technology is based on the basic elements of nature. It harnesses simple, proven, driving forces, like gravity, natural circulation and condensation to provide an advanced, passive safety system. The plant uses these features to automatically shut down and stay safe in the highly unlikely event of an accident, reducing the need for human intervention and the potential for human error in any situation.
Defense-in-depth is integral to the AP1000 plant’s innovative design, with a multitude of individual plant features and an advanced control system that allow plants to operate with substantial margins for safety.
The AP1000 plant has attained an unmatched safety pedigree through reviews by safety regulators in Europe, Asia and the Americas. In fact, it was the first Generation III+ reactor to receive design certification from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
In short, the AP1000 plant is safe, simple … and the art of innovation.
