The Westinghouse Science Honors Institute (WSHI) is a free program for high school juniors from Western Pennsylvania who demonstrate a strong interest in science and who are of high scholastic standing. WSHI consists of 10 Saturday-morning lectures, from October through February, on selected topics in science and engineering. Each lecture is given by a Westinghouse scientist or qualified member of the academic community.
Please note that with this 2007-2008 lecture series and going forward, WSHI is open to juniors only.
For the fourth year in a row WSHI has received a U.S. Department of Energy award, officially called the Innovations and Enhancements for a Consortium of Big 10 University Research and Training Reactors Mini−Grant, which will enable accepted students to take an optional trip to tour the Penn State Radiation Science and Engineering Center's Breazeale nuclear reactor. Since so many students are interested in the medical field, arrangements have also been made to visit the Mount Nittany Medical Center to hear a lecture.
Students attend WSHI to gain insight into careers in engineering and science. They network with professionals in the "real world," and interact with students from different schools who also have the same abilities and interests.
Approximately 375 students are accepted into the program. Held annually, nearly 12,800 students have attended WSHI, and many have gone on to successful careers in science and engineering.
The 2007-2008 Westinghouse Science Honors Institute is sponsored by Westinghouse Electric Company and Siemens Power Generation.
