Westinghouse Creates Opportunities for Bulgarian Suppliers

SOFIA, February 27, 2014 -- Westinghouse Electric Company today hosted a supplier summit in Sofia for local companies in preparation for the potential construction of a Westinghouse AP1000® nuclear power plant (NPP) at Kozloduy.

The summit was organized in cooperation with Toshiba Corporation, the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), Bulgarian Industrial Association – Union of Bulgarian Business (BIA) and Confederation of Employers and Industrialistsin Bulgaria. Over 140 representatives from close to 100 different companies and organizations across the country participated in the summit. The event was focused on how the companies can do business with Westinghouse – including the opportunities and challenges with supplying products and services for the AP1000 pressurized water reactor (PWR).

The event was opened by Elenko Bozhkov, Deputy Chairman, State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission of Bulgaria and U.S. Ambassador to Bulgaria, Marcie Berman Ries. The opening session included a number of keynote addresses from high-level representatives from Bulgarian business and industry. The Japanese Ambassador to Bulgaria, Takashi Koizumi, was also present. Westinghouse presented its views on nuclear new build opportunities and supply chain strategy in Bulgaria, including the process to qualify suppliers. Following the event, Westinghouse provided an opportunity for further discussions with those companies that matched its supply chain needs.

Speaking at the event, Westinghouse president for the Europe, Middle East and Africa Region Yves Brachet said, “The construction of an AP1000 reactor represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Bulgaria to invest in the latest technologies and adopt the highest and most competitive standards for their industry. As the AP1000 PWR is the most advanced nuclear plant design in the world, significant engineering, construction and manufacturing expertise will be shared with Bulgarian companies, providing substantial opportunities in future nuclear plant projects throughout the world.”
