Low-Voltage Motors

Class 1E Low-Voltage Motors

Westinghouse Pump and Motor Services supplies replacement low-voltage motors that will maintain the Class 1E qualification of the original motor. These low-voltage motors are manufactured to original Westinghouse specifications and the current qualification standards for safety-related Class 1E applications in nuclear power plants. These motors can be used as replacements or spares and in a variety of new applications.

Interchangeable low-voltage motors for non-nuclear safety applications are also available.

Description

Westinghouse low-voltage motors are manufactured on NEMA Frames 143T through 449T. They feature the Westinghouse environmentally qualified Class H random wound insulation system for harsh environment motors. A qualified Class F random wound insulation system will be provided for mild environment motors. Both harsh and mild environment motors are certified to be electrically and mechanically interchangeable in fit, function, and seismic/environmental qualification consistent with the Westinghouse motor originally supplied or the non-Westinghouse motor specified. Selected Class 1E motor designs have been standardized to provide features most often required. Replacement or spare motors may include some extra feature(s) not specified or originally supplied.

To enhance reliable motor performance and plant availability, a wide selection of Class 1E replacement parts, upgrades and technical support is available for both Westinghouse and non-Westinghouse motors. This includes replacements for obsolete parts.

Interchangeability

For replacement of existing Westinghouse motors, certification is based upon review of the existing motor design records. For replacement of non-Westinghouse motors, certification is based upon review of the information supplied by the customer. Although minor changes in conduit box size and location and total weight may be required, Westinghouse will certify that environmental and seismic qualification equals or exceeds that of the motor originally supplied.

Qualification

All Westinghouse Class 1E low-voltage motors are furnished in accordance with the Westinghouse Quality Assurance Programs meeting applicable requirements of the NRC for quality control and assurance, including the requirements set forth in 10CFR50, Appendix B. Either harsh or mild environmental qualifications are available, as required to meet the plant-specific application. Westinghouse also complies with 10CFR21 reporting requirements.

For safety-related Class 1E applications, the motors are further qualified to accepted environmental and seismic standards.

Seismic

Seismic qualification is accomplished using a standard static or a static coefficient analysis. If Westinghouse performed the original analysis, the seismic requirements originally supplied to Westinghouse will be met or exceeded. Westinghouse has standardized the following levels which should envelope nearly all applicable seismic requirements:

Mild Harsh
SSE: G's in H1, H2 & V directions 4.0, 4.0, 4.0 6.0, 6.0, 6.0
SSE: G's in H1, H2 & V directions 3.2, 3.2, 3.2 4.8, 4.8, 4.8
Seismic Qualification at higher G levels may be possible.

Environmental

Westinghouse low-voltage motors are qualified to the following typical environmental parameters, depending on harsh or mild environment application.

Harsh Parameter Outside Containment Inside Containment
Qualified Life 40 years Case by Case
Radiation, TID 5 X 107 R
Temperature, Normal 40°C or 104°F
Temperature, Short Term 90°C or 194°F
Pressure Atmospheric
Humidity 90%
Chemicals none

Mild Parameter Outside Containment Inside Containment
Qualification Period N/A No
Radiation, TID 1 X 105 R
Temperature, Normal 40°C or 104°F
Temperature, Short Term 50°C or 122°F
Pressure Atmospheric
Humidity 90%
Chemicals none

Typical manufacturing lead time is 36 weeks for harsh Class 1E, 8-14 weeks for mild class 1E, and 6-12 weeks for non-safety-related medium motors. However, Pump and Motor Services maintains a limited inventory of selected Class 1E motors and can ship immediately if the motor is in stock. In critical-need situations, expedited delivery may be possible at additional cost.

Standard performance data, dimension sheet, storage instructions, instruction manual, standard test report, summary seismic report, Certificate of Conformance, Certificate of Qualification, quality release, and spare parts list are furnished for each motor design.
