Children's Hospices Benefit From Partnership

Once again employees of Westinghouse Springfields have risen to the charity challenge and raised much-needed funds for the Site Chosen Charities – the local children’s hospices Brian House and Derian House.

The two hospices have been the site’s chosen charities for the past three years and an incredible £60,000 has been raised by employees, which has been split equally between the two charities. The monies raised by employees at the nuclear fuel manufacturing plant, near Preston, has been used by the charities to provide much needed equipment at both locations, including magnetic play boards, a pulse oximeter, ceiling hoists, kitchen equipment and furnishings at Derian House.

The proceeds have been raised through a variety of ways, including a Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle ride, raffles, sponsored walks, cake sales, quizzes, fantasy football competitions and dress down Fridays. The total also includes a £12,000 donation from the company. Several areas also took the opportunity to carry out maintenance work and gardening projects at the hospices as part of their annual safety workshops.

“All levels of the organisation from apprentices to directors have helped to raise the £30,000 for Derian House Hospice,” explained Jill Kirkham, Community Fundraiser, Derian House. “The commitment of the Westinghouse Springfields employees has been excellent and has exceeded all expectations on a fundraising front. It is support like this that allows us to continue to provide the high quality palliative care for children who are in need all across the North West. From all at Derian House we would like to thank Springfields and their employees for their support over the last three years.”

The final proceeds and equipment from the employees’ efforts were handed over to Derian House at a special presentation at the hospice recently.

“The amount raised over the past three years is absolutely fantastic,” said Springfields’ Community Relations Manager, Steve Whitehead. “I’m extremely proud of everyone at Springfields who has helped with the fund raising for Derian House and Brian House, which in turn has supported the excellent services they provide.”

Brian House and Derian House are the latest charities to benefit from the kind-hearted employees who have raised over £150,000 for good causes over the past 13 years. Other charities supported in recent years include Childline, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, North West Air Ambulance, Breast Cancer Care, North West Ambulance First Responders, Barnardo’s, as well as the Royal Preston Hospital Neonatal Unit.
