Initially apprentices are taught basic engineering and craft skills to NVQ Level 2 on a 6 month foundation course before starting on specialised training programmes. Following the foundation course, training continues in the advanced workshops of the Training Centre. The third and fourth year apprentices carry out specific tasks throughout the manufacturing plants under the guidance of trained, skilled craftsmen.
Apprenticeship are currently being delivered in the following trades and have an expected duration of 3 ½ years:
- Electrical maintenance
- Mechanical maintenance
- Instrumentation & Control
Following the specialised training programme apprentices then progress to a cycle of plant placements to work under the guidance of occupationally competent plant based employees and begin to demonstrate competences in their designated NVQ qualification. You will attend a local college on day release to achieve the technical certificate National Diploma in Engineering.
Westinghouse Springfields currently offers Degree Apprenticeships in:
- Business Management
- Nuclear Engineering
- Software Engineering

Apprentices attend college on day release to study for an appropriate qualification. Apprentices who perform exceptionally well may be offered the opportunity to study at Higher National Certificate level and further to degree level.
A personal training plan is devised for every apprentice and reviewed regularly. Apprentices are encouraged to become involved with local community projects.
All the apprentice training programmes have been set up to achieve national standards through the awarding body EAL. Springfields Training has been inspected by the inspection body Ofsted and received good grades for all areas of its training, thus ensuring a first class start to a career in industry.
